Govt. to reduce child/maternal mortality - Jul 5, 2008

Vice President Joseph Boakai says government and its international partners have made significant progress in improving the country’s health sector.

VP Boakai however noted that the health sector is still faced with some challenges. He noted that most of the critical issues cannot be properly tackled, unless the foundations of a functional health sector are firmly laid.

Speaking Wednesday at the dedication of the Wahdwahim Clinic in Gardnerville, Vice President Boakai stressed the need to increase the number of health practitioners because according to him, Liberia’s ratio of Physicians, nurses and midwives is extremely low.

VP Boakai also emphasized the need to expand access to basic health services that will focus on material and newborn care, child health, reproductive and adolescent health, among others.

He said government is also considering reducing child mortality rate by ten to fifteen percent and maternal mortality rate by five to ten percent over the same period.
