NEC & UP refute Teahjay’s statement - Jul 4, 2008

The National Elections commission (NEC) says its attention has been drawn to Mr. Milton Teahjay’s statement, published in the July 1, edition of the Heritage Newspaper, in which the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) Executive erroneously claimed that members of the Board of Commissioners are surrogates of the ruling party.

The Commission reminds Mr. Teahjay of the dire consequences of such misguided statements.

NEC further clarifies that it remains a credible entity, a fact that can be attested to by the international community and the Liberian people.

NEC, in a release says, repeated reference by the Congress for Democratic Change and its Executives, that the party was cheated during the 2005 elections has no basis, as the matter of election contest was disposed of when the CDC decided on its own, not to pursue the case any further.

The Commission says it regards Mr. Teahjay’s recent comments, attacking the integrity and independence of the Commission and calling for its replacement as yet another conscious attempt to malign the reputation of the Commission.

Meanwhile, the National Secretariat of the Governing Unity Party has described as lies and anti-political, statements by CDC’s Milton Teahjay regarding the alleged formation of a death squad as well as the transfer of huge sums of money out of Liberia by Government officials.

The UP National Secretariat, in a release says, Mr. Teahjay’s statements are an attempt to again deceive Liberians on the successes made by the Unity-led Government in the social, economic, political and cultural sectors of the country.

The Secretariat said the allegations levied against the Unity Party by the CDC stalwart are a deception and intended to sow seeds of discord among Liberians.

Recently, at the CDC third anniversary celebration in Monrovia, Mr. Teahjay accused the UP-led Government of transferring huge sums of money out of the country as well as the formation of a death squad.
