Campaigning has ended in the Democratic Republic of Congo, before the final round of the Presidential Election on Sunday.
According to the BBC, the run –up to the poll is being marked by series of armed clashes between supporters of the incumbent President Joseph Kabila and his main rival, Vice President and former rebel leader, Jean Pierre Bemba.
On Friday, the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan expressed his deep concerned about the increasing level of violence.
Dr.Annan called on the two remaining candidates Joseph Kabila and Jean Pierre Bemba to ensure a peaceful, transparent and free election.
But the BBC Correspondent in the Congolese capital, Kinshasa says, there is fear that the loser may reject the result and fight on.
ELBC AFRICAN NEWS / Ivory Coast
A French Cargo Vessel has left Ivory Coast with dozens of Re- enforced containers of toxic waste on board, two months after materials were dumped in opened air sites around the main city, Abidjan.
The BBC says, the Ivorian Authorities are still investigating how the waste came to be dumped, after being un-loaded from a vessel, chattered by a Dutch Oil Trading Company, Trafaguru.
The materials containing poisoned hydrogen sulfide was blamed for the deaths of ten people, after a hundred thousand more suffered vomiting diarrhea and breathing problems.
ELBC AFRICAN NEWS / Somalia
Thousands of young Muslim men have demonstrated in the Somali capital, Mogadishu in support of the called for holy war, against Ethiopian troops that have crossed into Somalia.
According to reports, the demonstration was called by the Union of Islamic Courts, the Islamist Group which holds power in Mogadishu and wide areas in Somalia.
The young men were urged to register their name for a Jihad or Holy War. Although, Ethiopia said it troops are in Somalia only on a training capacity. |
